Letter of Appreciation to the Masons
The C. E. Towne Masonic Scholarship of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of California has been instrumental in shaping my academic and personal journey at Brown University. Over the past four years, this generous support of $40,000 has allowed me to fully immerse myself in my education, engage with professors, pursue transformative experiences such as studying abroad, and conduct meaningful research. As I reflect on my time at Brown, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities this scholarship has provided, as well as the values it represents—values that resonate deeply with my own upbringing and aspirations.
The Masonic commitment to education, community, and service has long been a part of my family’s legacy. My grandfather, Louis Garrett Sr., a man of integrity and discipline, instilled in me the importance of lifelong learning, perseverance, and making a difference in the world. His dedication to service shaped my mother and, in turn, me. Because of this scholarship, I have honored that legacy by pursuing a rigorous academic path, engaging in leadership roles, and dedicating myself to causes that align with my passions.
At Brown, I have had the privilege of majoring in Health and Human Biology, an interdisciplinary concentration that has allowed me to explore the intersection of healthcare, business, and language. I complemented my studies with coursework in economics and French, preparing myself to approach health inequities from both a scientific and global perspective. One of the most impactful projects I undertook was my capstone which my primary research was created in a digital newspaper addressing health disparities in dermatology in the United States—a topic that is often overlooked in medical education and is important to me. This experience deepened my commitment to advocacy and reinforced my desire to work at the intersection of health and equity.
Beyond the classroom, I have been actively involved in campus life. Serving as Co-Captain of the Women’s Club Lacrosse Team has been one of the most rewarding experiences, allowing me to develop leadership skills and foster a strong sense of camaraderie. Additionally, my roles as a French Language Peer Tutor and Teaching assistant, an Administrative Assistant in the Student Activities Office, Treasurer and Co-Vice President for the Club Sports Executive Council and a Research Committee Member in the Brown Investment Group have provided me with professional experience and honed my ability to collaborate across disciplines. Each of these roles has reinforced my dedication to mentorship, organization, and critical thinking—skills that I know will serve me well in the future.
A defining chapter of my Brown experience was my semester abroad in Paris, where I directly enrolled in a French university. The transition presented challenges, from navigating coursework in a second language to adapting to an entirely different academic system. However, these obstacles pushed me to grow in ways I never anticipated. I developed resilience, independence, and an even deeper appreciation for cross-cultural exchange. This experience solidified my belief in the power of global education and reinforced my ability to adapt to new environments—both essential qualities for my future career.
The past four years have been a journey of intellectual and personal discovery. Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and research while taking on leadership roles has been challenging at times, but it has also been incredibly fulfilling. The C. E. Towne Masonic Scholarship provided me with the freedom to explore these opportunities without financial constraints, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. As I prepare for the next chapter of my life, I carry forward the values of education, service, and resilience—values that have been nurtured by my family, my experiences at Brown, and the generosity of this scholarship.
Thank you so much!
